E441 Gelatin - be aware if you don't eat pork!

Recently, I have seen a reportage on French TV Channel about the gelatin used in yogurt and I've got the urge to write something about this shocking subject.

The factory presented in the reportage was using pork skin to produce gelatin that to be sold forward to dairy factories. The problem is that the dairy factories don't specify the source of this ingredient on the label of their products.

Customers who buy yogurts, they see on the label only the name of gelatin, without the source, in this case pork skin. The most intrigued were the people that don't eat pork: Muslims, Jewish and others. So, if you don't eat pork be aware next time when you buy a yogurt.

What are the different types of additives?

Food additives are grouped by what they do. The additives that you are most likely to come across on food labels are:
  • antioxidants (stop food becoming rancid or changing color by reducing the chance of fats combining with oxygen)

  • colors
(please refer to the Food Additives Bible application for information about dangerous colors)
  • emulsifiers, stabilizers, gelling agents and thickeners (help to mix or thicken ingredients)

  • flavor enhancers (used to bring out the flavor of foods)

  • preservatives (used to keep food safer for longer)

  • sweeteners (intense sweeteners are many times sweeter than sugar whereas bulk sweeteners have a similar sweetness to sugar)
